Challenges of Managing Acute Ischemic Stroke (AIS) in the Emergency Department

Every year, more than 795,000 people in the United States have a stroke. The numbers are quite staggering: every 40 seconds, 1 person suffers from a stroke; every 4 minutes, 1 of these individuals dies. According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), 140,000 Americans die each year from a stroke. The development and implementation of designated primary and comprehensive stroke centers has become increasingly important in treating this severely debilitating condition. This program takes a case-based approach in understanding the challenges associated with the management of acute ischemic strokes in the emergency department, and covers measures and interventions which can be implemented to improve outcomes.
